Short communication: Chemical structure, concentration, and pH are key factors influencing antimicrobial activity of conjugated bile acids against lactobacilli

Effects of chemical structure, concentration, and pH on antimicrobial activity conjugated bile acids were investigated in 4 strains lactobacilli. Considerable differences observed the between 6 human acids, including glycocholic acid, taurocholic glycodeoxycholic taurodeoxycholic glycochenodeoxycholic taurochenodeoxycholic acid. Glycodeoxycholic acid generally showed significantly higher against lactobacilli, but exhibited lower activity. Glycochenodeoxycholic was selected for further analysis, results its concentration-dependent, there a negative linear correlation (R2 > 0.98) bile-antimicrobial index logarithmic concentration each strain Additionally, also to be pH-dependent, it enhanced with decreasing pH, result that all lactobacilli unable grow at 5.0.
